Ask HN: How can I future-proof myself

1 points by _fvh3 2 years ago · 2 comments · 1 min read

I am in my last year of school, aiming for a career in CS, this means I will likely enter the job market in ~5+ years.

With the contracting CS job market and the rise of AI, it seems like it will be a lot harder to get entry level positions, I have seen loads of posts on HN of people struggling to find jobs, even at salaries below the market rate.

Is there anything I should be doing to get ahead of the competition, apart from the obligatory "build a portfolio" & "leetcode", would getting into a better university help/ what about paid degree apprenticeships? Any particular uni courses I should do? I have a few large scale (fairly unique) applications that I have yet to publish/ make public, any advice on this?

PS: I live in the UK, Tuition fees are capped and we have a generous student loan repayment system, the cost of uni is less of a factor than somewhere like the US

getting certs in high demand fields will practically guarantee you sail through any interview process at any company. The hot ones right now are cloud architect, cloud developer, data engineer, and anything security related. Don't pay attention to loser developers who do nothing to keep educated on cutting edge technologies.
