Ask HN: Adventurous IT Jobs

I love IT and I love outdoors & adventures. Reading stories of someone working in Antarctica makes me feel happy for them, and also brings envy. I know the standard recommendation to combine IT + adventure is to just earn enough to be able to travel, or something along those lines. However, I’m looking to for a way to make adventure as part of my daily life. I get bored out of my mind living a “standard lifestyle”. And travel for the sake of it feels shallow. I was wondering how could I find something that is IT related but is not tied to sitting in an office all day? The most interesting jobs seem to be “on the field” type of jobs for nurses, social workers and such, but perhaps there is a niche for us IT people as well?

Consulting you get to go and work in different places. Not as glamorous as Antarctica but it still has some variety. Look for a place that does short contracts, the danger is working at Accenture or something and being embedded for 2 years at a client in some really boring place.

Maybe look up maritime/sea-going/ocean-going IT jobs.

Thank you! Any advice on where to find those? Is maritime experience required?

I don't know; all I know is that there are ships out there with high performance computing products on them for the purposes of geological exploration and other similar work. "Sorry, it's gonna take us some time to upload those logs for you. The connection is not so good out here in the middle of the North Sea."
