Twitter, now X, to remove blocking feature
bbc.co.ukOthers have mentioned, it is in the terms of the apple App Store and google play store that to have your social media app listed, it must support blocking(1)

This is false. See:
> To prevent abuse, apps with user-generated content or social networking services must include:
> A method for filtering objectionable material from being posted to the app
Filtering is exactly what muting does, which will still be allowed.
This is entirely because so many people block Space Karen, isn’t it?
I was guessing it's a hamfisted response to Block the Blue
It's really easy to get around the block, so I would have to agree that it is not that useful of a feature.
Is that really their priority though? The platform seems to be just a sandbox for one guy at this point. I guess if one is into that...

Even if that may be true, it seems X has been doing well lately. Admittedly, my timeline has been sharing a lot more interesting items than I had previously received.
I respect your opinion and personal experience because it’s certainly unique, but I don’t there is consensus that modern twitter/x is doing well lately. If anything, the general mood I pick up seems to be that it’s flailing unpredictably.
I say this as someone who had never used twitter, purely based on what I hear from people in non-twitter spaces, talking about twitter. It is possible I am subject to sampling bias: digital refugees from old twitter are more likely to be on non-twitter social networks and be generally discontent about the new direction of the platform they’ve eschewed.
Majority of the people on my timeline using twitter would admit that it has improved in some shape or form. Even opensourcing the algorithm has been very fruitful for many. There are many decisions that people disagree with, but it's overall has worked out.
The main improvements for me since Musk took over:
- No more unjustified blocking of accounts by activist moderators, as far as I can tell.
- The new "following" timeline now shows all and only the (re)tweets from people you follow. No "recommended" or "liked" tweets interspersed like before.
The main thing that got worse:
- For accounts with many followers, it shows not the most relevant (liked etc) replies on top, but the replies of random people who bought Twitter Blue. I mean X Premium.
Overall I would say it's significantly better in my opinion.
his experience isn't unique. it is in fact very common, from what I've seen
Some have a fetish for online abuse at this point - giving and receiving it by arguing online as a sort of validation of their world views.
Blocking is useless if your profile is not private.
The useful part of blocking isn’t reading someone’s content, but being unable to directly react in a discoverable way to it via reply and quote.
I suspect this is what Musk will undo.
Blocking will become a way to filter out responses you don't like, but others who follow you will still see comments and reactions if they also do not already have a user blocked.
At the time of writing, Twitter does not allow viewing profiles unless logged in
I can. It only shows the account "top" tweets instead of newest, but I can.
Huh! I tested it in a Windows Sandbox yesterday and got kicked to the login prompt immediately, but testing it today shows the "top" tweets - weird
Have people been blocking Musk?
