Another Request for Hacker News and Dark Mode

6 points by eande 2 years ago · 4 comments · 1 min read

This request has been posted two months and all I can do is pile on another request within the comment section for Dark Mode.

I don't want to install a js or pay for it and just use my Safari browser. It can't be that hard for HW to add that simple feature.

Saves a lot of energy and better for the eyes. Let's make it happen.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "I don't want to install a js"?

Does this mean you don't want to run JavaScript at all? Ever? That's a pretty tall order in today's world. I can understand having JavaScript disabled by default. But that said, JavaScript can be useful for what you want.

I know this because I empathize greatly (except I prefer light mode). In any case, when I saw this comment:

in a previous thread, I immediately created the appropriate bookmark-let so that my eyes wouldn't go crazy trying to read dark-mode pages.

Maybe it can serve as a solution for you too if you're willing to compromise a bit.

I assume you mean a JS injector extension when you say "install a js," you don't need a JS injector, but you do need a CSS injector. There are no features you should pay for on HN.

Adding on to the discussion, I don't mind light mode in websites. HN is like a mid-2000's throwback website, there wasn't dark mode back then, but it's 2023, and people are used to dark mode. Why not give them what they want?

If somebody made a good HN app for iPad, I’d pay $5 a month for it. Features I’d like would be actual good design (not just feature notes that say, “Stunning, clean, beautiful”) and the ability to block specific users, topics/keywords, and domains.

FWIW I really enjoy using _Modern for Hacker News,_ [1] a free extension that enables dark mode. available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge... and soon, Safari (according to its maker).
