VanMoof explores sale under court protection because it can’t pay bills

There are some interesting implications if Vanmoof can't come out of this alive, because a lot of the bike's functionality is based on cloud services.

Can someone briefly explain to me why a bike needs servers? I am curious, but given that it's no longer for sale, not curious enough to slog through corporate-speak myself.
