Privacy in the WeChat Ecosystem

Surprise! --- nothing about WeChat can reasonably be viewed as being really private.

The same holds for any other Chinese app. In a totalitarian system like the one in China, there is no effective boundary between company and military/government. Any suggestion otherwise is merely an illusion offered for western consumption.
