Microsoft account abruptly suspended permanently due to unused Skype account?

Has anyone else faced this issue? My Microsoft account was recently abruptly suspended for no obvious reason, and I was locked out of all of my MS accounts, including OneDrive where I kept a lot of my old photos. And yes, stupid me kept putting off backing it up elsewhere and unfortunately OneDrive has the only copy of many of my old photos which I consider to be precious memories and I would really like to have them.

I contacted them via the form they gave and this is what they said:

"The account and billing activity associated with your Skype Account was thoroughly reviewed and the Skype account in question has recently been converged with a Microsoft account (MSA). Unfortunately, when a Skype account has been converged with a MSA, we are unable to assist with an account recovery as the convergence takes account recovery completely out of control of customer service. We are unable to remove the unwanted MSA or make any changes to the security information on the account due to security protocols set up on the account.

The only option we have is to permanently suspend this account to prevent any further use of the account. I have verified that the account is suspended and will remain so."

This is absurd! I have not used my Skype account in ages, and due to it being "converged with a Microsoft account", I can no longer recover it and my access to all the rest of my MS accounts are suspended? I'm even still paying for a subscription currently!

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to try and recover from this? If only just to get my OneDrive contents back. It seems ridiculous that they would deny you access to your personal files, which I'm even paying for, because of some BS Skype-related issue?

In the short term, issue a Subject Access Request under GDPR. Ask them for all of your data. That will get your photos back.

If you want to fight this, you could also ask for any internal correspondence about you and your account. That should give you some insight into what they're doing.
