Hey HN!

Skyname is the world's first Bluesky username registrar.

Pick a fun domain from bsky.cool to tired.io and register your username in seconds. It'll automatically create the TXT record used for verification, assign it to your account, and update your handle on Bluesky.

Interested to hear what y'all think :~)

Don't hijack the back button, I will never use it just because of that reason, and entering my bluesky username and password into a random website is the dumbest thing I've heard

I'm not hijacking the back button :~( just a simple Next.js app.

Bluesky doesn't have an OAuth2 API right now, so as a temporary way of authenticating with your Bluesky account you can create an "App Password" in settings with a name that can be revoked at any time. This is not the same as your account password. Hopefully the field placeholder makes this clear, but I'll probably reject any auth that uses the accounts main password going forward.

Thank you for trying it out though!

You are in fact hijacking the back button, at least in Chrome on MacOS. Not saying it was intentional, but please fix this.

I’m not really quite sure what this does so I wouldn’t login. Feels like it will change my handle to something maybe? “Username registar” doesn’t explain much.

Skyname lets you register a username like example.tired.io (or another domain such as .bsky.cool) and switch your Bluesky username to it automatically. Will try and improve on communication here, I get "username registrar" is kind of hard to understand at first glance but after learning more I think it's a good description. It requires very specific user interaction to first select a new username and then register it and change your account, so logging in (make sure you generate a new App Password in settings) won't do any writes to your account automatically.

I think adding just this explanation to the site would go a long way. Especially the “won’t do any changes automatically” part.
