Ask HN: How Would You Raise a Child?

7 points by _fvh3 3 years ago · 4 comments · 1 min read

Given you had unlimited resources (including money) & if you had an abundance of free time how would you raise a child to give it the best chance as success & fulfilment in life.

What gender & why? Would you do anything to prepare like research any topics? Would adjust your diet/ health before you conceive to yield better genetics? What would be your preferred age of parenthood?

Why did you ask a question like that? Do you have the resources? Because the real world is constrained by resources, thus your question is not relevant to most of us. A relevant question is how to navigate best when resources are limited and we’re bound by many constraints (laws, societal norms, spouse’s expectation etc.)

It’s also worth noting that we should live our life as well. Raising children is only one part of this life. Success and fulfillment depends on so many factors, that no effort can bring warranty, especially if we venture outside of social norms and expectations (do a monastic life brings success and fulfillment? How can a preparation for corporate life can help succeed in a monastic life?)

I thought it would be nice to collect advice from parents and people who specialise in childhood development etc. anyone with knowledge really.

I feel like a lot of people wish they received a "handbook" on how to tackle life, or at least certain stages of it

I should have worded the question differently to be at least a little bit realistic, something like an early retiree with a good sum of money in the bank, enough to travel to any desired location and live comfortably

One person said "BIll gates has 3 children, now all adults, one of his children is Phoebe Gates, one look at her online presence says all you need to know, after a certain point I feel like money brings more disadvantages than advantages for children." but it was marked as dead

What exactly is wrong with her? Sure she is a bit pretentious, but she goes to Stanford, she is an intelligent woman!
