Our favorite site can be tough to read at night. Enter Hacker News with dark mode. Based on nginx, it's pretty much the exact same with some css tweaks and a few replacements.

I realize it's not original, but it seems like every past attempt is now gone.

Should you trust some random site with your login? Probably not.

How does it work? Do you proxy the request and overlay custom CSS through something like a CF worker?

Proxy through nginx and then I add in custom CSS (for the colors) and a snippet of JS to keep the HN links proxied.

CF worker is an interesting idea. I'm going to look into other ways to run this without a dedicated VPS.

Good effort, yes useful for night time - Something is jarring me against the original though, I'm not sure what but the sizing and spacing seem off somehow? out of interest does the css only change the colours? Although maybe it's just the colour changes.

    Thanks!

It does only change the colors. The top navbar lost its background color. Maybe that's the difference? I'll work on adding that back in.

Interesting - I thought you may say it's colours only, just surprises me the impact it has, any designers reading this won't be surprised by that though.

Agreed. I've thought about putting a light/dark mode toggle on there.
