Show HN: Discontent – Extension to fight garbage content on the web
github.comCreator here, I made this out of mild frustration with the current state of search engine results. Let me know what you think. If this becomes used by any significant number of people, there will be bot farms dedicated to upvote bad content. The problem has never been ranking the Web, that's the easy part. The hard part is preventing bad actors from participating in the ranking. The way I see it, ranking the web was the easy part but it has already started to become hard. It's an old trope that search engine results were fantastic around 2010, but these days there's so much bloat and SEO to deal with that ranking is becoming intractable. I miss the days of Youtube dislikes where you can instantly see whether a tutorial is going to be any help. I figure with decent moderation for bad actors, a system like this could definitely work. Take the success of Reddit / HN / StackOverflow as proof of it.
