Ask HN: What foreign languages do you know or want to learn, and why?
I’ve been teaching myself Spanish over the last two years, primarily through Duolingo but increasingly been branching out into other stuff like Netflix and newspapers. Also in the process of making a bilingual blog to practice my writing skills and will likely end up taking lessons in iTalki or something similar.
Decided to learn Spanish as I dislike England and want to move somewhere warm and sunny. Spanish is spoken widely across the Americas so figured it would be a good choice to learn.
After I’ve mastered Spanish, I’m thinking about learning either German or French. I’d like to be able to speak Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian. I’ve done a fair amount in each language on duolingo but I‘ve definitely devoted more of my time to Spanish than any of the others. I’m finding it more beneficial to stick to mastering one rather than flitting between different languages every few months like I used to.
iTalki always makes me laugh when hearing it - it's not a service I've sought out but would be the first place I'd be trying out/spending money with if/when doing so.
Right on though! I've family in spain but live in the states so am much more familiar with mexican spanish, it's a great language to know for traveling to warm places. Que te vayas bien y buena suerte
Gracias! Espero conozco ambos países algún día.
Out of curiosity, why Duolingo?
I like the structure of it and can see myself making progress with it every day. It’s also relatively cheap at around £70/year.
Simplified Chinese.
Because I am considering relocating to China for the foreseeable future. I enjoyed living there.
I currently speak English as well as French, it’s fun learning a tonal language
I want to learn Icelandic, for no other reason that is beautiful.
English. Does English count ? :)
