Vivienne Westwood has died
theguardian.comFor those who don't know much about her, there's a great documentary called "Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist" from 2018 by Lorna Tucker. Apparently Westwood hated it, but it feels pretty honest. Looks like it's available on Amazon Prime and Disney+ (at least in the UK).
Adam Buxton had the director Lorna Tucker on his podcast, in which she talks about the making of the film (amongst a great many other things): https://www.adam-buxton.co.uk/podcasts/lpbk8k9zbhx54zt-8yl8m...
I’ve seen lots of upvotes here, but no comments, so I thought I’d recommend the folks here to go read about her life.
Besides a brilliant designer, she has shaped a great part of what modern UK culture came to be.
She’ll be missed.
From the article:
As an anti-consumerist, Westwood gleefully undermined her own business interests. In 2010, she told AAP: “I just tell people, stop buying clothes. Why not protect this gift of life while we have it? I don’t take the attitude that destruction is inevitable. Some of us would like to stop that and help people survive.”
According to Vivienne Westwood a parent has two tasks
1. help a child in finding it’s passion
2. once found, support it in exploring their passion
I don’t work at all closely to her life’s focus, or indeed with any significant fraction of her talent and drive, but I’m inspired by her nonetheless. RIP.
Genuinely sad about this. She was such a talented and important artist. I loved her work; she made one of my favorite necklaces I own. RIP.
