Ask HN: Why am I getting so many ToS update emails?
Today alone I have got emails from 6 different services informing me they updated their terms of service. Is this to get ready for new laws in 2023, or something else? There’s usually some variant of ”You have two weeks to react”, and it’s a good bet most people won’t be reacting to emails too fast around christmas holidays I got many, too. Some of those came from Polish services, so I'm guessing it's both changes to the law but also a "new year, new ideas" type of changes. We like to start anew. It's a slow time for most non-retail businesses, and also a good time to sneak in user-hostile changes while users are busy with the holidays. Happens to me at the end of every year And, do I have agency to guarantee that they are fair to me? Nope. Let's get as many users as possible and once they are hooked let's update ToS is the general approach it seems. phishing? I hope some day we can use chatGPT to give us the tl;dr of TOS changes. I'd like courts to find that giving someone a long contract online is responsible for you understanding it and if the bulk of users are confused to meaning of it, the parts that are confusing aren't legally binding.
