Ask HN: How to deal with jobs uncertainty/anxiety?

2 points by starboyy 3 years ago · 3 comments · 1 min read

Hello,

I am a F1 student, about to graduate in December 2023. I recently started getting anxious looking at the job market/layoffs/hiring freeze. How to deal with it?

I am a graduate student from a decent university, academically very strong, have 2 years work experience back in my home country. I have done summer and fall internship as well as a software engineer. I still am getting job rejections/no reply backs from the company where I have applied to. :((((

There are always ups and downs but you sound like you're in a position where you don't have the experience yet to see that. Personally I'd make sure to have savings to bridge the gab should you be laid off or have trouble finding a job in the first place.

You've chosen a field that's probably on the much safer side of things in terms of job security so try not let it affect you too much. It's easy to say I get it but it'll be fine. Probably.

When are you looking to start work or interning ? It could be the timing, the market but could also be the companies you're applying to. A different approach will help. Have you worked with an early career coach ? I'd say join some groups on LinkedIn or outside for early career / new graduates and I'm sure you'll find get some support. Happy to help.

It’s not nearly as bad as 2008, you’ll be fine
