Apple to lay off a third of its workers (1997)
wired.comGreat callout. I believe the playbook for Twitter is now crystal clear:
* Bring back Jack Dorsey as the founding luminary
* Have him strike a deal with their ancient rival Facebook for an injection of capital in exchange for embedding Instagram on Twitter
* Watch as the stock price goes vertical (??)
</satire>
Yes I know this is a joke. But I think the satire was about bringing Dorsey back.
Just to make it perfectly clear though, Microsoft’s “injection of cash” - at the tune of $150 million had nothing to do with keeping Apple solvent. The CFO at the time had just secured a line of credit of a couple of billion before Jobs returned.
At the time I think reassuring the public that Microsoft Office would continue to be available on Macs was more important than the money.
Ahh yes. The time when Apple stocks were trading less than $1. And the company was on the express train to insolvency.
Ah, the old double-take-before-seeing-1997 trick.
