XBB is a variant of omicron and has already shown to be immune evasive
nbcboston.comCOVID19 variant P.1 (aka: Gamma) was also incredibly immune evasive. But Delta spread more than it, so Delta ended up being the dominant strain.
Immunity evasion is certainly a useful trick, but its not enough to become dominant. IMO, just wait around and see which variants show exponential growth. Currently, that's the BA.5 variant (but we're on the tail-end of this cycle).
BQ.1 is really the new variant of concern IMO, just reaching over the 10% mark in the past week or so, and continuing to grow seemingly exponentially.
