I absolutely cannot fathom why this is better than a normal pressed tin license plate.

In our state, we just update our registration online, no need for stickers etc on the car or it printed on the plate. If a cop needs to check the rego, it comes up on their in-car TARDIS system. I can't see why having to increase the complexity of a license plate is better than that.

    Maybe California is just so big and diverse that they have to do this...

    I always found whole system so weird. Living in country with plates staying same for whole lifetime of vehicle(or at least until it is moved to "veteran vehicle" status, but that brings new limitations). Just get pay the tax online and handle MOT and everything is fine.
