Hey HN,

I’m Kamil and one of the two people working on WalletWatch. We recently graduated college and have been getting more into crypto / web3 over the past year.

A few of our friends had been getting into crypto more recently, but we noticed that it was hard to actually see what they were doing or natively engage with the transactions they were committing. Products like blockchain.com and etherscan.com were too technical, and products like Context or Zerion lacked key features that make modern products social, such as descriptions, likes, and comments.

We built WalletWatch as an easier, more social, and more fun way to see and engage with your friends’ Ethereum activity. We don’t ask for your email or password, and instead authenticate by asking users to sign a transaction with their Ethereum wallet; we ask for usernames to give a more familiar and user-friendly experience for people that haven’t purchased ENS or other crypto domain names. At the moment, we’re storing user data in Firebase instead of on-chain because the current decentralized channels are too expensive or slow.

We consider WalletWatch as pre-alpha. The website only renders in a mobile viewport and isn’t totally visually or computationally optimized, because we wanted to see if people liked this thing enough for us to spend more time making it polished.

We’d love any feedback you all have! Please e-mail me at kamil@fwd.exchange or Blockscan Chat me at my address: 0x85eEF00b9a78A993359E94FD3Bcf65e9BDe909FB

Guys, there's zero reason for a webapp to only be visible below a certain screen width - if you think the styling is going to break above a certain width, just set a max-width on your container and center it.

Another tip - allow the user to see the dapp before having to connect their wallet - the friction of having to connect, even just with metamask / 2 clicks in total, is enough friction for me to just close the site.

At the very least, show screenshots or something on the landing page.

Good luck!

we definitely are new to dapp development, and are learning as we go so we really appreciate the specific feedback! we completely agree with your points on the friction in signup, and will change the design of the site to reflect that. Also thanks for the centering tip we didn't think of that! :))

"Please shrink width of browser to use the app!"

Say what?

We initially built it on mobile just to gauge people's interest, since we only asked a few friends before setting out to build. However, if enough people like it, we will definitely whip up a desktop view as well!

Not even just mobile though, trying to visit the website on iPad mini

hey, Shiv here, the other dev for the project! just pushed an update to expand the mobile viewport to support devices up to 800px wide, but we haven't actually done any styling for that size yet, so there may be some kinks. We'll work on getting an update with a true tablet view out soon!

Is there any way to see what I would be getting into BEFORE I connect my wallet?

Disclaimer: I don't have an Ethereum wallet in any case, and am just interested in what exactly this is about.

Immediately chases you away with the truly ridiculous ask to change your browser width. Hard pass, believe it or not some people still use actual computers.

noted! will whip up a desktop view soon. we love our PCs too, but we're less experienced at front-end development which is why we did mobile first and classified the product as "pre-alpha"! Appreciate the feedback though.

How is this a social network - the name is literally Wallet /Watch/? It’s just another “copy other people’s trades” solution.

  • kjkisielewiczOP 4 years ago

Didn't think about the name being misleading, but you definitely have a point.

We designed it with the intent of people engaging with their friends' transactions, as opposed to focusing it exclusively on NFT traders or yield farmers. Unlike other solutions, you can't see transactions of people who aren't on the platform, and you can actually engage (like, comment, edit description) with transactions.

    Thanks for the feedback!
