Companies that impose this arbitrary engineering ladder are silly imo, it only ever results in the illusion of "upward" mobility and people feeling better than other team members despite having no leadership skills. Ideal company has Engineer, Team Lead(s), Engineering Lead(s), clearly defined roles and who has the decision domain over what.
