$5 WiFi6 Router? Um, Thank You, D-Link
shop.us.dlink.comBased on some reviews, this is a sub-par router, especially in terms of reliability and 2.4GHz performance. Perhaps they're just trying to liquidate their stock of it and make a few bucks while they're at it.
I suspect so too, but I'm not too sure they're really making any buck at all on it. Sounds like they're selling it for the cost of production
It's a sunk cost if it's in their warehouse, and it costs to store. Every dollar they make on the sale is an earned dollar.
Firmware is automatically updated/managed. Not sure I would trust that. What are the odds they're monitoring usage to improve the system?
Apparently, the reviews in Amazon tells AX1500 is a lemon. AX1800 probably fixes a few things but still problematic:

I was going to buy 6 of these just to get free shipping, and use it as mesh wifi AP, but it turns out it there is a limit of one per order.
Do they want these sold or not?
I just added the USB adapter for over $30 orders get free shipping...Least good for gifting...
can you run openwrt on these?
No. The hardware database doesn't have AX1500 or similar.
Would this be an improvement over an old Netgear R7000?
look here first, pay close attention to HW version and oem FW revision

im running 2 R7000 with openwrt, and DD-WRT
I just tried ordering, it is sold out.
Sold Out.... :(
$13 shipping but ok
edit: not trying to be super critical. in my head it was just notably old world, was what buying stuff online used to be like.
Can you ship a router for cheaper? I'd be interested in hearing about your logistics setup.
I suspect the more salient point is that a 5$ router that you can't get for less than 18$ is not a 5$ router.
I get that, but moving an object from a warehouse to your home isn't free.
The router itself costs $5.
I added another product to my cart and the shipping charge went away; the line price for this router is still $5.
So, yes, it is a $5 router.
Well that's not a valid point. The router is $5. The shipping is $13.
You're an eBay seller's dream customer.
No, I'm aware it's still going to be $18. But you wouldn't try to argue about the point if you ordered on Amazon or whatever and picked multiple items and the shipping was still $13 lol.
I've got a brand new Tesla for sale for $50, would you like it? Shipping is $600k
Well I have a router for sale that costs only $2!
* shipping is $20
How much is the VAT?
In the US, VAT doesn't happen
In the US many people evade paying sales tax
TCO is a thing.
Wait, is shipping that expensive in the US? As an individual in Germany I pay 5,50€ for DHL (2kg, tracking, insurance up to 500€). As a business customer it's even cheaper.
Could it be the case that the US is ~30x larger than Germany?
