I think people get Don Rumsfeld wrong.

He had great credentials as a "business of technology person", I mean, he brought the first digital HDTV system to market when he led General Instruments, and also was involved in Gillead developing a small molecule antiviral (Tamiflu) which is one of the hardest problems in drug development. Those alone make him a good candidate for the board of a company like Theranos. On the other hand he should have known that if you squeeze a little bit of juice out of somebody you are going to get lymph and intercellular fluid and be able to say very little about anything quantitative.

His involvement in the 2nd Gulf War calls into question his judgement on global affairs. SALT II was a real contribution and I am still scratching my head about how he kept the US out of the UN Law of the Sea which makes

possible.

Rumsfeld was perfectly happy to organize black prisons (aka secret prisons not in the us, in other countries where us civil rights didn't apply), where the us took people who were kidnapped after 9/11 from various places around the world and tortured them. The US did this on my behalf. Then they pushed through legal justification for torture when they waterboarded people in Guantanamo. Then tons of republican politicians said it's not so bad. So no, there is no rehabilitating him because he brought the first hdtv system to market.
