What happened to simple, basic web hosting?

Simple web page hosting still exists [1] and there are many scripts out there to generate a static gallery. Some do not even require javascript and instead use html refresh to cycle pages. I want to say one of them was called "gal2" or something but I do not have a link in my bookmarks.
