Like many things in the america, the mass-produced stuff isn't always great. But https://www.utzsnacks.com/pages/hawaiianbrandsnacks_home (huh, didn't realize they're owned by utz now) beats any chip I've had in terms of crispyness, flavor, and the flavor options (not that potato chips need a flavoring, and in fact those flavorings are mostly covering up inferior potatos) include mango habanero, BBQ (a verrrrry common US flavor), and my personal favorite, "sweet maui onion"

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer dips over oddly flavored chip varieties. The dip can add a wider variety of flavors and I can control the amount. I don't know if others feel this way or not.

Is it the chips themselves or the tastes of the people eating them? Maybe most consumers don't want exotic or oddly-flavored chips. I spent some time as a child in Canada and remember there being roast chicken and hamburger flavored chips. They didn't last long.

The focus groups target people who are already heavy potato-chip consumers. The article alleges that demographic is variety-averse.
