Ask HN: What Happened to Zas Editor?

3 points by jnye131 4 years ago · 3 comments · 1 min read

Zas editor made a splash here on HN a few weeks ago. The binary hasn’t been available for a week or so, the domain, zeditor.com is up for sale, and the GitHub issues repo doesn’t have any owner activity.

Was it all too much? Is it just they used the now unsavoury Z in their product name?

projects disappear.

and "splash" may well be an overstatement

    > projects disappear.

This was a commercial editor released not even a month ago.

For a Mac-only, commercial piece of software there were more positive comments than I'd expected to be honest.

The developer responded for the first few days, but then stopped completely, along with disappearing downloads and now web-site. After that "splash", nothing.

I treat is as fraud (or whichever legal term applies - if any, we were perhaps just gullible) due to the short timespan between release and disappearance, but the editor seemed interesting, such as its navigate mode.

So the question is whether the developer just felt overwhelmed and gave up, or someone else's code was used to compile a minimal working version to set up a scam, or something else completely. The app was also notarised, which requires a paid Apple dev account.

As mentioned on the Zas github issues, which is still there, it's an odd choice for a scam considering the small target group.

yeah, we're all guilty of not supporting side projects. I'm interested because I'd like use the app - if it is going for a rebrand then I'd like to know and grab a copy.

As for splash - maybe you'd like to suggest a more appropriate term? It was a popular post for a few days.
