I am not philosophical or pedantic enough to quibble about common usage of "I am an X" implying a job/career rather than a statement of ultimate fact. Maybe it's just my world view coming through, but "I do baking" is different from "I am a baker". The former implies activity while the latter states a position.

The key thing to take, aside from software people can get anal, is that one should not define themselves solely as a function of what they do. Because at some point, it stops and thus takes away their core definition. I am a software developer, but at some point I will be a former software developer. Before than, and probably after that I was a hacker. But, fundamentally, I'm just me. I like to play with computers and all those other hobby or personal activities that amuse or pleasure me.
