Why do people trust AWS in a way that they don't trust GCP? Its because of things like this.

One of the most important things about building on top of a cloud platform is that the platform needs to not move out from under you! That means, don't turn off features and services I'm depending on. It also means don't completely change the pricing model after I've built a business around the old model. AWS knows this and has a 15 year history of giving customers this stability.

GCP on the other hand has a track record of changing pricing models and turning off services. It has gotten to the point where I am simply not comfortable using GCP to build on, even if their solution is technically superior to AWS. I just can't trust that they won't pull the rug out from under me again.

GCP has a major problem with their reputation, and it doesn't seem like they are even aware of it.

I know they're aware of it, Cloud is the laughing stock of the rest of Google engineering. Thomas Kurian is also good at doing things a certain particular way: his way.

Unfortunately, his way is fucked up, which means stupid stuff like this will just keep happening ad nauseum until something big changes.

To add to that, AWS will gladly give you as much human support as you want. Google support (or lack of) scares the shit out of me.

From a link in the article: https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/google-restructur...

> To build a sustainable operating model that enables us to delight and improve Googler well-being over time, we are accelerating our strategy to move some work to our Support hubs and vendors and are restructuring our operations to create further efficiencies

To delight? And improve Googler well-being over time?

...get me a bucket, the corporate speak is making me nauseous. Hell, even just the word Googler - I'd say it's the worst, but well, Facebook has Metamates, so they win this one.

I think we’re exiting the ever decreasing cloud price era.

The commodity market for compute is tight, and nearly all the prices have increased. Im surprised we’ve stayed as stable as we are currently. I actually expect to see increases from AWS in the next 6 months given dc and power pricing.
