I think a move from centralized reliability studies and economic commitment/dispatch to a decentralized approach will be enormously difficult if we're talking about a fully automated system without operators in the middle.

Much of what the article is advocating for is demand side participation, which is indeed the holy grail of energy markets. We're not quite there though, so demand is still very inelastic which causes all kinds of problems.
