If the Ukrainian government is not concerned with the activities of Russia, what drives the west to be concerned?

Do these events have implications for anyone other than the Ukrainian people? Implications other than the old concerns of Russian expansion?

For example, “the West” could be quite pleased if Russia invades Ukraine, but at a large cost. Basically turning Ukraine into new Vietnam or Afghanistan. This “concern” does not help Ukraine in any way, it already had a cost on economy - falling national currency and so on.

Ukrainian government is concerned, but it has to balance the "defense" side of the problem with the "economic impact" side of the problem (considering that this "Russia will attack at any moment" situation may last for years).
