Where I live in Canada, it is pretty much the same story.

The salaries of local companies here in Canada outside of Vancouver and Toronto are such that if I told people here what the best dev I worked with earned in USD a year ago (he finally joined the remote train), people would wonder if I was the worst developer they ever met if I thought someone earning that was a star.

The number is 95,000 USD. Two years ago here, that would have hired you an ex-FAANG senior developer in Calgary. I actually know of another ex-FAANG dev earning about 75000 USD as he doesn't want to go remote and family issues keep him in Calgary.

I think those salaries are probably not too different from the US if you go outside major centers and FAANG. There is also the question of taxes and out of pocket expenses like healthcare that makes salaries harder to compare between countries.

In Montreal or Toronto there are lots of devs making > 200k CAD (170 USD?). Salaries are definitely lower than SV but the disparity is not huge.

For out of the way places, like Calgary or the maritimes, there is a local appeal where people from there want to stay there, and so salaries are lower because people are there for lifestyle and the companies that set up there do so because they know they can pay less.

I’m in Chicago suburbs and it’s probably about $85k USD for a junior level role sw engg role. It’s not faang but those numbers are still lower than a lot of US cities.

5 years ago I had a 40k offer in Vancouver and a 150k+signing bonus offer in Seattle.

If Canada wants to keep its talent, it's gotta pay for it

The company I work for is hiring devs in Mexico City and considering "off-shoring" multiple teams there. In this case getting rid of the US based devs.
