Wiki History Game
wikitrivia.tomjwatson.comThis is addicting! Great game design. Sadly, the data from Wikidata isn't perfect -- often you'll get something that has many dates that could be the starting date, but you're not sure which one it's looking for (this happens a lot with countries as well as with abstract concepts and fields of study). Like if "Norway" comes up, does it want 872 (when the regional kingdoms first unified) or 1905 (when Norway split from Sweden and formed the modern country) or some date in between? Another example is the Giant's Causeway, a rock formation in Northern Ireland; I assumed the inception date was millions of years ago, but the game wanted 1986 (the year it was recognized as a World Heritage Site).
And then there's the vandalism -- so far I've had to deal with Hong Kong flu's description being changed to some all-caps Spanish profanity, and Colt's Manufacturing Company's start year was set to 69. Both of these changes are now fixed on Wikidata, but the game seems to be using a data export from around April 2021.
I think an ideal version of this game might use a dataset that's been carefully inspected by humans, though obviously that would be a lot more work to implement. Still, very fun.
