Ask HN: Keeping track of events of your friends and family?
Hi HN,
I’m getting older and with each year that passes I realise how valuable the small things are — like getting a call on your birthday.
I’ve stopped using Facebook for 3 years now but I can’t seem to find a good way to keep track of birthdays or other important events.
I’ve tried using a self-made Roam system after I got frustrated with my Notion duct-tape solution. I’ve also used personal CRMs, like Dex, but they seem built for “professional connectors” — which I am not :)
How do you do it? Pen and paper? Real rolodex? You might want to check out https://github.com/monicahq/monica. Requires an upkeep but the UX is great. I found the 9$ / month pricing to be a little steep. You can self-host it. That’s what I do. Microsoft 365 Family calendar that’s shared. We have about 30 people who update the calendar across family and fiends. Private, secure, cheap at $45 (costco) a year. How does that work? 30 people don't normally share the same family and friends. Mostly it's like a never ending Venn diagram. Just curious. That’s interesting. Do friends use it for themselves as well or update it to keep you in the loop?
