Show HN: Poor man's VPN (simple WireGuard playbook)
github.comSo a $5/mo digital ocean droplet, or you could pay $2.99 a monthly from a plethora of VPN providers and have access to several different types of encryption technology and probably 100+ locations.
Of course, there are lots of skeptical people on HN about how safe and private a third party VPN company is, but I question the usefulness of a VPN where the only user is you.
I have a Digital Ocean droplet using Wireguard for just myself and my mate.
My use case is not wanting my ISP to snoop on my activity, and not being as nervous when connecting to an open wifi network, such as at a hotel or medical office/hospital.
YMMV
This playbook doesn't give you any anonymity (unless you secretly use someone else' server).
Here's the motivation: Lately due to GDPR many websites are closing doors in EU. For me, I cannot order medicines for my parents back home via netmeds.com or book flights/hotels via makemytrip.com
With wireguard and this playbook it becomes trivial to perform these tasks for very little cost.
