I wonder what this means. Are they going to go the RedHat route and replace Docker with something else?

  The following features will be introduced to Amazon Linux 2022 before it is released for general availability.

  * Container runtime

    There will still be Docker. It’s widely used in production by customers, including as part of other AWS services.

You can also run amazon linux on premise also, i was using it as a kvm box and it worked fine. I was wondering if it was a feasible option to replace centos with it.

Hmm so are they getting rid of Amazon Linux 2?

I thought Amazon Linux 2 was the official "forever" rolling release.

I wonder if this was prompted by some of the changes IBM has made to CENTOS

    Amazon Linux 2 is still a supporter OS. When it was released we announced it had 5 years of LTS support. With the AL2022 preview, we have just announced what comes after AL2.

    AL2 is less of a rolling release than AL1 was. AL1 had a new release every six months.

>Graphical environment (such as MATE or GNOME)

Is there a reason to use this on desktop?

    Currently Amazon Linux 2 is used for AWS workspaces (virtual desktops), so it doesn't seem far fetched that they'll eventually allow AL2022 for it as well.

    It will allow you to provision user desktops in the cloud using just Amazon Linux, which is a nice thing.
