Switch to OpenStreetMap
switch2osm.orgThis website seems to be targeting people who embed maps in their own site, but as a mobile user I’ve tried to switch to osm a few times on iPhone but it’s always been unusable. Searching for common things results in no hits. I like adding data to osm but I don’t want to add something 5 times a day. Granted I’m in a smaller city (175,000 people), but I’m wondering if I’m doing it wrong? Or is this just the state of osm in smaller cities? I’d LOVE to use osm if I can find a way to make it work better for myself.
Can you tell us the region you're living in? I'm Europe-based and OSM is good enough for what I need/want, but I also take part in updating/adding to it a lot.
I know that address data is hardly usable in large parts of the OSM world. What iOS app are you using for 'accessing' OSM? From https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Comparison_of_iOS_applic... I suggest https://organicmaps.app/
I’ve used organic maps and Maps.me. I’m in the USA.
I can only say that adding to OSM benefits anyone who's searching for 'common things' that are still missing.
Often it's a long stretch until the map is 'fully usable', but that's the thing when you try to avoid Google (which is my use-case).
And - as I live in Central Europe - OSM is very well usable for me any my use-case.
According to wikipedia, Maps.me is using OpenStreetMap data. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maps.me
All the Apps I linked above (Organicmaps and Maps.me included) use/display OSM data ;)
Organicmaps is a fork of Maps.me, without their new 'wallet' function and (I think) no ads.
Nice, ty, just checking it out and I like it a lot!
Can't say this enough: Do it, now!
