Just like Afganistan, zero covid has no endgame.

I don't know, maybe they are still vaccinating their risk groups, so it makes sense. But at one point in future they will have to open the borders and accept the inevitable.

If you are an island with a relative small population you have that luxury to react this way to a health hazard.

China took same approach, also how they shut their port last week. It's willingness, good leadership, social cohesion, and trust in science - UK/US seem to lack all four. Size, population and remoteness are irrelevant.

The UK has had a successful NHS vaccine campaign that has resulted in breaking the link between hospitalisations and cases, now removing the need for further lockdowns.

We are aware that after preventing people from mixing, our immune systems are now more at risk from more typical virus outbreaks this wintertime, which is one of the costs of lockdowns.

We have already seen in history how isolated populations can be at risk of viruses such as smallpox. New Zealand's attempt to isolate the world is making the best out of a bad situation, but it's by no means the only way to "trust the science".

One case = strict 3 day lockdown for the entire country

Yep, it's nice to live where serious threats are treated seriously - none of us want Delta getting a foothold. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/449376/covid-19-communit... our level 4 is very strict, no mucking about.

Then stop infection and get it back to 0 so you can have half a year without cases & do whatever you want. The previous case was in February.

It's kind of silly to look at it out of context. Look at those Kiwis they locked down over 1 case... Because theres been 6 months without any cases so its easier to lock down and stop the spread of that 1.

Staying home for a few days as a public health measure sure seems a lot nicer than staying home because if you don't you might die in an overwhelmed hospital while gasping for air.
