Show HN: Get a plastic, wallet-size vaccine card
vaxcard.comI'm astonished by the lack of security of these cards. In Europe we have a digital COVID certificate which consist of a QR Code, easily verifiable and unfalsifiable.
Anyone vaccinated can download a PDF version of this certificate with its social security number in France.
I understand better why US citizen have trouble to travel in Europe since there is actually no proof that one is really vaccinated.
The world has utterly lost its collective mind.
What's to prevent someone from using this to forge vaccine cards?
What mechanism stops people from forging the original vaccine cards?
In Canada you can receive up to $20,000 in fines for falsifying this information, so you really have to want to avoid the shots badly if you wanted to go down that route.
But the reality is, most places that aren't medical or international border facilities, that would require proof of vaccination simply don't have the ability to verify any of the current certificates. Including the original CDC cards from the US.
The website and domain whois info don't say who these people are, and don't ever mention they are in any way connected to the CDC. It looks like all they do is take the hand-written parts of your original cards and plug them into their template that may or may not be using the CDC logo and identity legally.

None, and that’s the real problem of the CDC cards. For a service like this to succeed, it needs to come up with a verifiable solution, which I admit is pretty difficult to do other than on a federal or state level.
This is cool but the FAQ needs more information on how legit this is and who the company is.
Advice: Offer a discount for return customers since proof of booster shots will be needed.
LOL why not just ... carry a photo of your actual vaccination record on your phone?
Taking a photo of it is even the first step in getting one of these -- you save two steps and ten bucks!
I wonder, BTW, if they just print your photo (hopefully after straightening and sizing it)? Then the quality is entirely dependent on your camera, lighting, etc -- could be rather shitty. Or if (hopefully) they OCR any text and other data (QC?) and insert it into a print-quality template; then only your mugshot and signature, if it holds any of those, depend on your photo.
I can make my own plastic ID card through various services online.
What are you bringing to the table that I couldn’t easily do myself?
Nah I’d want this from the government not a third party.
