The personal computer industry gained from basic research done at Xerox PARC in the 1970s. Wondering if we have a parallel for that today.

I'm interested to learn about basic research being done at tech giants and promising results that have been produced.

All sorts of things! I was working at a semiconductor company, and one of the research I came to know about was brain telemetry i.e. collecting data from the brain for analysis.

There are lot of exotic projects going on in these companies, ones that outsiders may not think that the company would do. This is to build a patent moat as well as generate license revenue.
