Ask HN: Tech Jobs with Pensions?

1 points by edhowzerblack 5 years ago · 5 comments · 1 min read

Not sure if this exists. Does anyone know of any employers in tech that offer a pension? My skill set is web development but I am open to hearing about other tech roles, too. Thanks!

Universities often offer decent benefits, including pensions in some cases. Also, state and local govts tend to do this as well (depending on your state)

I'd be curious to know what folks see as the benefits to a pension that are otherwise not reproducible with a 401(k) and standard brokerage account. The only difference with the brokerage is ERISA protection, which provides protection from creditors in the case of a judgment.

A pension offers a guaranteed income at a specific rate based on your salary at the time you retire. With 401(k) you get what you get based on how you invested and what the market did.

When I freelanced as a frontend engineer for NBC-Universal in 2007-2008, the full-timers had pensions. They might still offer that.

GE is probably hiring.
