Ask HN: How to stay current with engineering during an extended hiatus?

3 points by trvrsalom 5 years ago · 2 comments · 1 min read

Hey all. I'm about to graduate my undergrad program with a degree in computer engineering, and I know that long term I will want to pursue engineering as a career. However, right now it's looking like my world line is taking me along a path which will keep me out of engineering (both in industry and education) for at least around 10 years. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations as to how I could continue to keep my skills current and employable during this time?

I’m not sure what computer engineering is. Is that mostly hardware level discipline? If you are on a 10 year track, then most likely you have a better education path than half of us and probably know more about what it will take to stay relevant.

When I clicked on this post I was thinking of timelines like 1-2 years but 10 years is a long time to have something on the back burner. Do you really need to keep up? Do you want to have engineering as a hobby in some way?
