Ask HN: Most Frequented Websites to Learn

18 points by puzzlepursuer 5 years ago · 12 comments · 1 min read

Which forums or websites do you regularly visit to learn and/or share information? These could be forums where you interact with other users or simply browse for information. They might be referred to as "social news websites."

Some prominent sites that come to mind are Reddit, hacker news, Stack overflow, and Slashdot. Quora, although not in its present form, perhaps would fit too.

That list seems like it hasn't changed much the past few years. They all have positives and negatives. If you'd like to share your opinions of them, please do.

Niche forum sites are worth mentioning as well. They don't have to cover the range of Reddit, HN etc. They could be sites about gardening, digital photography, or science fiction. Ideally they're devoid of negativity and encourage civil discourse.

Also interested to know any websites that you visit solely for broad learning purposes. Wikipedia is the most well known example of this type of site.

This thread on HN earlier is a gist of some the forums: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21920173

Thanks. From the thread you suggested, this too covers some of the topics https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20023209

I know there have been at least a handful of similar threads over the past two years. But a lot has changed since then, except the main websites in discussion.

Later this week I may reconsider how to frame the question, while providing some positives and negatives of each of the major sites to help initiate a conversation. HN appears to have much more activity during the standard work week and I didn't consider that before posting.

May be silly but I like to join slack channels of technologies or things I’m interested in and seeing the discussions in the advanced topics. Even if I don’t get it I can figure it out and learn.

It’s how I got into programming years ago (not on slack back then ha) and throughout since then to learn new stuff and make connections.

What was the forum that helped get you into programming?

Regarding slack, you need an account right? Do you have one through work?

I love automobiles, during school days I used to buy used Car/bike magzines from scrap dealer in KGs.

Growing up I wanted to become a mechanic or long distance truck driver. But life had some other other plans for me and ended up in becoming a IT Coolie.

Teambhp is best forum for auto enthusiast in India, thier Moderation is very strict, like you get temp ban for wrong grammar or misspelling but content quality is good.

Also, as they don't sponsorship from manufacturer, reviews are unbiased.

I'm glad you've maintained a passion. If you're familiar with any good pieces of info regarding the environmental consequences of hydrogen vs. electric cars, please share any and all. Specifically of interest would be info on precious metals and the production of vehicles. Energy conversion efficiency info is easier to find.
