An interesting advantage of abstracting the Media Engine is that on the vita, which features large parts of the psp hardware for backwards compatibility, the media engine can be completely shimmed, without any issues for (retail) games.

Even more interestingly, the gpu can render at higher-than-native resolutions, which can be used on the vita with some patching (with corresponding degrations in quality, like lower framerate and lower bitdepth)
