theverge.comonce, a joy of the internet was that no one knew, and few cared, what color your skin was, who you loved or how, or whether or not you were a dog.
A lot of people don't seem to know how to deal with you if you don't express your identity online. They are so determined to view everything you say through the lens of who you are, it completely confuses them if they can't.
I find they tend to just assume you're a member of whatever demographic they don't like.
