It's a shame to see some internet service providers acting this way. I'm so glad the net is neutral in the united states at least. It's interesting to see Twitter taking a more active stance in banning accounts here, and I wonder what the long-term repercussions of that will be. In the last few days we've seen companies act faster than government, which I think will generally be true. But hopefully when government acts it will be a bigger and longer lasting change.

I'm guessing this was submitted because of Twitter's ban of Trump's account, so I'm responding accordingly.

I don't think anyone thinks open internet is a bad thing, or that censorship is a good thing.

I DO think it's up to each of us to figure out which is the lesser evil. Counting this link, the evils up for ranking are:

1. Twitter banning Trump's account.

2. Trump using his account to incite hate.

3. Internet service providers being ordered to block social media and messaging apps.

If I had to rank them from most -> least evil, I'd say 3, 2, 1.

Possibly others here will have a different ranking. But for gods sake lets argue about the ranking and not about whether censorship is bad or not, since that dead horse has been brought to life and beaten to death again.

You guessed wrong. I wonder if reading the Tweet before commenting rather than guessing would have saved you from all that rant?

Not that I disagree with your comment, just think tweets are pretty short and far too many comment without reading anything other than the title.

Well I did read the Twitter thread but now I’m curious what I missed.

Ahead of the Ugandan election, we're hearing reports that Internet service providers are being ordered to block social media and messaging apps.

We strongly condemn internet shutdowns – they are hugely harmful, violate basic human rights and the principles of the #OpenInternet.

Sorry my bad, I interpreted your comment to mean Twitter "Tweeted" in regards to Trump. I now see that You may have meant, You guessed it was linked to HN because of Trump whuch is entirely plausible. Sorry for the Snark.

Heh, no problem! I have two top level comments now so I guess now I'm A/B testing them to see which is more popular.
