"hate" is a strong word. I dont see any reason a well-intentioned, upbeat engineer can't simultaneously appreciate and loath a legacy codebase they are being remunerated to maintain.

Sure, it solved/solves a lot of problems, exterior to those that maintain it. To those that maintain it, it probably causes untold suffering (tongue in cheek - unless many 2am pager duty calls result from it)
