Apart from how terrible this is, I was wondering how this works. I'd say it is quite hard to cut off a head with a "knife" in a short period of time without other people interfering.

Well this might sound odd, but I've seen some videos.. it's very likely not just a kitchen knife. I've only seen this happening with large blades. And then it actually happens surprisingly fast. I imagine they "train" somehow to get some routine.

But either way, I can't see anyone interfering with something like that going down.

According to a source equally reliable as this (Reddit), someone tried to interfere but got stabbed.

Sounds very likely. As much as one might want to help, unless your trained in self defense or you have some kind of weapon yourself, I'd imagine its really hard to interfere. Especially if the attacker is trained, the outlook for people trying to help isn't exactly great.

So just for the record. By now there's photos, and the blade looks long but not very broad. Looks like a filet knife I would say.

Why has there been so much Islamic terrorism in France?

  • jfengel 5 years ago

France has a long, ugly history of colonization in Islamic countries in Africa. That left a very strong negative feeling, not entirely unlike Iran shows towards the US. That makes France a target for terrorism -- not because they expect anything from France, but because of the ways terrorism is promulgated, as resentment looking for a target to strike at.

If you're interested, I'd start here:

Nobody will talk about it honestly, but: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_migrant_crisis

I understand there has been an influx of migrants. Are you saying they’ve entered France in disproportionate numbers or are disproportionately marginalized relative to migrants to other European countries, and this is causing excess hostility in France?

I just don’t understand why France is experiencing this differently than Belgium or Germany or Italy, etc etc.

      • rglover 5 years ago

I'm saying that there has been an influx of migrants from countries that are dominated by Islam https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_Syria (the faith the most recent beheading attacks were attributed to).

What each country is doing differently to manage and accommodate refugees I can't say, but it stands to reason that a large influx of people from a wildly different culture will create problems like the attacks we've been seeing.

For at least two of the attacks (2015 with Charlie Hebdo and the teacher a few weeks back), they involved a slight against the Islam faith. This most recent one appears to be related to religious differences given the context.

        Edit:

Apparently today's attack was performed by a Tunisian refugee where Islam is the state religion:

Things aren't really that much different in Germany. Things have changed from big attacks to lots of small ones that don't get reported.

On 10-29 a 25yo woman was killed in Bremen.

On 10-28 a 21yo man was stabbed and almost killed in Hamburg.

On 10-27 a 19yo man was stabbed and almost killed in Leipzig.

On 10-26 a man was stabeed and almost killed in Berlin.

On 10-25 one man was killed and three were heavily injured in two different knife attacks in Brandenburg. Same day a 18yo was shot three times and almost killed in Kassel. Same day in cologne a 25yo man was stabbed and almost killed in cologne. Same day a 8yo (!) was held a knife to the throat. Same day in Stuttgart two men were heavily injured in a stabbing. Same day in Hamburg multiple people were injured by stabbings and 6 shots.

On 10-24 a 22yo was shot and killed in Hamburg.

On 10-23 a woman was almost killed in Lemgo.

These were just the last 7 days. It does not include indicidents with non life-threatening injuries, which were there multiple of (Besides the 8yo thing, that was included for the age).

The thing is, those sporadic acts will have exactly opposite reaction. The 'protectors of islam' are pouring petrol under nationalist movement kindling . If that ever catches fire muslims will be the biggest scape goat for nasty things to come out of it.

This might sound farfetched today - it is as of today - but add together: global market crash, covid and big win for right wing party and local muslim pogroms are not out of cards. Look to poland and hungary, where leader would simply look away and pretend racist stuff doesn't happen.

Why did this all of a sudden drop off the front page?

  • secretsatan 5 years ago

It happened today and maybe treating it as a joke isn't all that appropriate?

    • rglover 5 years ago

The stabbing took place in Nice, France. OP wasn't codifying it as a "nice stabbing."
