Ask HN: Jobs in Europe North of €100k?
Hey NH. I am an expert in the field of autonomous driving with a PhD from a relevant University in a relevant field and with experience working in US. I have relatively recently (more than a year ago) moved to Europe due to reasons unrelated to work and am working at a big company on autonomous driving. Moving out of Europe is out of the question for me.
It seems that there is not really that many jobs that pay anything significantly north of 100k in Europe. One of the reasons might be that I am still young for my qualifications, so it is hard to even get the chance to show what I am capable of. The usual chore is the following: I would pass an interview, everybody would tell me that they would be really happy to have me, then I would name a price X and get an answer that because of various reasons they can't offer me anything above X - 30k even though they would really like to have me.
I feel I can do more and ideally would like to be compensated also more. I am not learning nearly enough currently on my job and I don't feel that I can allow myself to slack off at this point of my life - I feel I simply don't know enough in my field yet. At the same time I am working in a scrum environment at around 10% of my self-perceived capacity even though I constant try to find new challenges and do additional stuff along my scrum tasks. The whole scrum thing leaves me mostly empty by the end of a day, so I barely have time to even support my open source projects let alone implementing something new. My colleagues and my managers value me, but there are so many people around that just slack off at work while earning the same money as I do that it kinda kills my already weakened motivation. Ideally I would love to do more and earn more proportionally.
So the question is: do you guys know of any jobs in Europe that pay well over 100k and ideally carry more responsibility and decision making in them?
