Ask HN: So you started as a software developer.. What are you now?
Curious to where people's careers ended up. Did you stay a dev or move to a different role? Still a dev after 4.5 years. I don't really know what i want to do, and dev work pays pretty well for not having a lot of hours. I'm also improving a lot over the past year, so I'm going to keep saving money and keep at it until I reach a level where I can "always" fall back on it. I think maybe a technical sales role could be good. Can interact with people more (I'm social and don't totally look like a developer). Yeah that makes sense. I think I’m similar, I’m not a cliche dev. In fact I try to stay away from tech as much as I can when I’m not working. I’m trying to figure out if I want to move into a different role. I guess that as long as I can build something which would take me to product-market fit then that’s all I currently want to get out of being a Dev. Yeah same here, if I'm putting in work and learning while building something that solves a problem... it's like just good enough for now. I only care about talking about tech to solve problems. What do developers look like? More nerdy. Spend less time working out, being outside. Socially not as adaptable. Overly focusing on inane technical details just to show that they know a lot. Obv these are all generalizations. I stay as a dev, and I'll probably die as one. Love every minute I spent to learn and improve my coding skills. Left that job and am going to be a full-time grad student! A high school teacher and still a software developer!
