Critics Challenge the Health Benefits of Alternative Meats
bloomberg.comThe way I see it is this: both an impossible burger and a real beef patty are not good for you. I don’t eat meat for a whole bunch of reasons (health being one but not the only reason). So when I want to “splurge” and eat something unhealthy and delicious, I eat an impossible burger. I have no illusions about it being good for me.
I’ve seen a lot of hit pieces about impossible foods, and it stinks of beef producer propaganda.
Personally, I think eating beef is disgusting. I have no problem that others want to eat it. Freedom of choice! But I for one am super happy that these alternatives are becoming more available.
Impossible burgers make fake meat palatable to non vegetarians, and the less beef we eat, the better. Your average joe burger consumer would never eat a “Whole Foods, plant based mushroom burger”. Why? They all taste like crap unless you’re into that kind of thing. So having a viable meat alternative that anyone can enjoy can only be for the better.
From very quickly looking over the article they seem to be comparable to the meat. A bit more sodium I guess. I for one definitely isn't looking at meat alternatives for the health benefit. As long as they aren't dangerous and somewhat comparable to meat I'm 100% fine with it.
I was at a local restaurant a while back and ordered the "Impossible Meatball Sub" -- thinking it was some massive, overly-filled submarine that I'd never finish (call me nieve).
Quite honestly, I was beyond angry to learn (literally halfway through my meal) that it was actually an alternative meat substitute. I didn't finish it.
If restaurants are designating menu items as "vegan friendly" and "gluten-free" then they should indicate the items that are made with meat substitutes masquerading as real meat. Maybe others do, but this restaurant did not.
I'm skeptical of these products and I really felt duped after ordering and eating some of it when, if I knew ahead of time, I'd have never put that product into my body.
Hmm, end rant I suppose! :)
