What to do when your job is not what you thought it would be?
Hi everyone,
I am a 26yo engineer from Spain. I have been reading HN for a year already but I haven't ever written anything till today.
Thing is I am currently working as a Backend and Big Data engineer but I don't really feel it's my dream job: most of tasks are repetitive, technologies/tools are old as fuck, there is no such thing like CI, QA or even Agile in my team and most of the time I am working on features that weren't considered in the original design so you can imagine the problems I have to deal with.. Actually it's a pity because the project itself could be really interesting. Besides of that, there is a lack of company culture... In my previous job I used to hang out a lot with coworkers, play in the office, go to talks and workshops, etc. The worst thing, in my opinion, is that I feel like I am not learning much, or least, not the things I am into.
I know it can sounds like I am a complainer but I actually want to make the best of this experience and try to reverse the situation instead of quitting, that's why I would like you to give me some advice/opinion on how to deal with this situation and if some of you have ever faced something like this.
There are also good things that keep me attached to the job: The company is considered one of the best companies in my country, salary is competitive and they have nice perks.
Lately I have been into AI, Robotics and ML, I have always been interested in R&D topics in general, I have been balancing if a masters in AI would help me land a researcher job in one of those fields or if I should go for a course like those in Coursera, Udacity, etc.
TL;DR: My current job/company is not what I thought it was going to be. I am thinking how to reverse this situation and also thinking in going back to school or learn new stuff to land a job I would like more
